How does the Navy body fat formula work?

The U.S. Navy body fat estimation method was developed by Hodgdon and Beckett at the Naval Health Research Center. It uses circumference measurements combined with height to estimate body fat percentage using logarithmic equations. The Department of Defense uses this method for fitness assessments across all military branches.

For men, the formula uses waist (at the navel) and neck circumference along with height. For women, hip circumference is added to the equation. The Navy method is accurate to within 3 to 4 percent of clinical methods like DEXA scanning for most people, making it one of the most reliable tape-measure-only approaches available.

What measurements do I need?

  • Neck: Measure just below the Adam's apple at the narrowest point
  • Waist (men): Measure at the navel while standing relaxed
  • Waist (women): Measure at the narrowest point of the torso
  • Hip (women only): Measure at the widest point of the hips and buttocks
  • Height: Stand straight against a wall without shoes

Navy method formulas

Men: % Body Fat = 86.010 x log10(waist - neck) - 70.041 x log10(height) + 36.76

Women: % Body Fat = 163.205 x log10(waist + hip - neck) - 97.684 x log10(height) - 78.387

All measurements are in inches. If you enter metric values, they are automatically converted before calculation.

U.S. Military body fat standards by age

The Department of Defense sets maximum body fat percentages for service members. These standards vary by branch but the Navy standards below are representative:

AgeMen (max %)Women (max %)
17-2122%33%
22-2923%34%
30-3924%35%
40+26%36%

These are maximum allowable limits. Service members exceeding these thresholds enter a body composition assessment program. The Navy method calculator above uses the same formula used in these official assessments.

How accurate is the Navy method?

The Navy circumference method is accurate to within 3 to 4 percent of body fat compared to hydrostatic (underwater) weighing for most people. Here is how it compares to other methods:

  • DEXA scan: Gold standard, accurate to ±1-2%. Costs $75-150 per scan.
  • Navy method: ±3-4% accuracy. Free, requires only a tape measure.
  • Bioelectrical impedance (BIA): ±3-5% accuracy. Affected by hydration, time of day, and recent exercise.
  • Skinfold calipers: ±3-4% accuracy when performed by a trained technician. Requires calipers and practice.

The Navy method tends to slightly overestimate body fat in very lean individuals and slightly underestimate in those with higher body fat. For tracking changes over time, it is highly reliable as long as you measure consistently at the same time of day.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Navy body fat calculator accurate for women?

Yes. The formula includes separate equations for men and women. The women's formula adds hip circumference to account for sex-specific fat distribution patterns. Studies show the Navy method is similarly accurate (±3-4%) for both sexes.

Can I use metric measurements?

Yes. This calculator accepts both imperial (inches, pounds) and metric (centimeters, kilograms) inputs. Toggle the unit selector at the top of the form. Metric values are converted automatically before applying the Hodgdon-Beckett formula.

What is a healthy body fat percentage?

For men, 10-20% is generally considered a healthy range, with athletes typically at 6-13% and fitness-focused individuals at 14-17%. For women, 18-28% is healthy, with athletes at 14-20% and fitness-focused individuals at 21-24%. Essential fat (minimum for physiological function) is approximately 2-5% for men and 10-13% for women.

This calculator also supports the Covert Bailey method (tape measure), Jackson-Pollock 3-site skinfold (calipers), and manual entry for known values from DEXA scans or scales.
